"My work may be garbage but it's good garbage." Mickey Spillane

Scientology Once Again….

I got a curious letter and I would like everyone’s reaction to it.

I want to compliment you on your old review of Mission Earth from 1986.  I am sorry that you were in anyway harassed back then by anyone from my church.  While I have been a scientologist my entire life (2nd generation), I recognize ignorance and misguided evangelism.

As a future attorney in my 3rd year of law school, I have gained the ability to subjectively and objectively take any writing and look at it from different facets.  Coupled with my mechanical engineering background, I have a more logical and real viewpoint on things than most.

Having said that, your article is actually quite positive.  I don’t know what Simone or anyone else from the church were thinking at that time, and I do know that the church itself was going through internal upheaval in management—in fact Simone’s very superiors were expelled in 1987 for crimes much worse than harassing a reviewer of science fiction.

You context on taking the review prima facie instead of in light of scientology is well played.  And your analogies—while eyebrow raising to someone in the church—communicates quite effectively to the average joe who might not have any better clue or knowledge of scientology other than Tom jumping on a couch.  To me it “dead-agents” any preconceived notions so that someone might actually look at the book and story itself on its face and FOR THE STORY.  So well done.

I came across your old review in an ebay auction.  Upon further investigating, I had to respond to your warning.  Maybe one day someone from within  the church—instead of a mere parishioner like myself—will apologize for Simone’s actions and make up the damage in a manner appropriate in your eyes.  And maybe it will then be ok to remove an equally old warning on my church.  But in the mean time, you review is well received by me.  As a fan of the old greats—especially Bob Heilein—I really appreciate your putting the book and its author in a proper context so as to be reviewed without the outside “clutter”.  Your review on the story was spot on and I couldn’t agree with your break down more.

It seems he does not realize that I’m not a ‘sir’ LOL

And now, I would like to make a public reply to this:

Nothing will ever make up for the loss of income I suffered back then as a result of Simone’s actions.  A million dollars would not make it up.

Because the past is the past and can never be changed.

Does sound a more open and level-headed response from someone belonging to the church.

Interesting response from Mr Daniel. But why now? And is there a motive? To change public perception, one person at a time?

Aw, I’m getting all paranoid and conspiracy-like.

Anyway, nice response by you, Cuss. Nice response and very true. Well put.

Johaha, I am thinking the same way as you.

They’re trying to get people to accept their cult, and they will do whatever it takes. They have no qualms about destroying people’s lives. 22 years on, they’re probably thinking Cuss has either mellowed or forgotten the whole thing.

    Cuss mellowed? Ha! 😀

And I’m sure Cuss never forgets, either. 😉

Coming across an old review on an eBay auction sounds extremely odd to me, unless it’s in the context of an item description of a copy of Mission Earth. Even stranger is why this person would feel compelled to respond, 22 years after the review was written.

I’d be a little suspicious, but wouldn’t worry about it, if you receive no further correspondence from the person.

Watch it. Don’t reply to this guy, and don’t even look at the Scientologists. First will come the apology from a low ranking member, then will come the offer of an apology from a higher ranking member, then will come the iron fist hidden in the glove.

But of course, Cuss knows better than to trust them.

I have been through it once and once was enough. That review, which is still up at my website along with my account of what happened, was harmless. Yet, I got slammed for it.

My guess is that it was not a zine on ebay where he found the review. I gave permission for all the anti-scientology sites to reproduce both my article and my review. It has been very widely distributed. That is my guess where he found it.

And, based upon my personal experience, these matters are best dealt with in the light of day, in public and not behind closed doors where most abuse happens.

Now, now, Al. I know it’s a shock, but you’ll survive. You just need some chocolate chocolate-chunk ice cream.

Scientology is a dangerous cult and Chris Daniel would never be elected in this town. Ever. We know the truth. We saw people protesting them for years. They informed the city, and scientology can lie all they want. But they will not prevail. For we have truth on our side. And the truth my friends, will set you free,
