Dagstine Does Egypt: history porn

Dagstine had a bunch on posts up and I only now started looking at them.  The one on Egypt was amusing.  You see, he has nothing new or exciting to say about it.  He apparently has not even read Budge on Egypt, which is where most people start.

Without digging out my notes on Egypt, I can point out a  piece of wrong information right there.  There was no “long journey” into the next world.  The ancient Egyptians had a belief concerning the soul that would best be described as a layered thing.  One aspect of the soul (and if I remember correctly) was called the Ka.  It continued to live in the tomb.  The grave goods were so that the Ka would have something to enjoy in the next life.

Early writers who created stories of mummies presented the Ka as the animating force that brings the mummy to life.

The presence of mummified pets has been mentioned in every tour book, every museum guide, and every tv documentary on ancient Egypt.

If you are going to tantalize us, Lars, at least give us something that is not common knowledge.

Wouldn’t that require him to do… research?

He went to a museum? What, did he need to use the bathroom?

There were three parts to the soul: The Ka, the Akh and the Ba. The Ka was tied to the body. It needed the stocked tomb to survive. The Akh seems to have flown to the stars if you were Pharaoh; it’s less clear what happened to Joe Average. The Ba was a human-headed bird. It flew off at the moment of death. There is a sexual element to the Ba which was required to regenerate in the next world.
